Connecting the dots between cost and carbon reduction for CFO's

See the recent H.R.2454 - American Clean Energy And Security Act of 2009, Eco-Finance blog posting...

Guess who’s going to have to buy carbon credits?

With the Carbon Reduction Commitment (CRC) looming just around the corner, the online news has been full for the last week or so with stories of those that are doing good and those that will have to buy carbon credits to meet requirements.

Some of those that are doing a good job are giants like HSBC who have, yet again, managed to reduce their carbon output by another 10% and who become the 100th achiever that the Carbon Trust Standard Company has certified.

Bellwether Services Authors a Tactical Green Supply Management Response to the Executive Order

Bellwether Services, an award winning and internationally recognized strategic management consultancy firm advising leading companies and government agencies on issues of strategy, operations, technology, and sustainability, is the architect of an innovative tactical Green Strategic Sourcing Methodology.

This methodology was developed in the form of a pilot program in support of carbon footprint reduction which is highlighted in the U.S. House Bill 2454 - American Clean Energy & Security Act and Federal Government Environmental, Energy, and Economic Performance Executive Order. H.R. 2454 bill and Federal Leadership Executive Order have specific 2020 goals that industry and government organizations must comply. Sample goals that will be reached include:

30% reduction in vehicle fleet petroleum use by 2020
26% improvement in water efficiency by 2020
50% recycling and waste diversion by 2015

"Our tactical green supply chain pilot program offers procurement, purchasing, sourcing professionals a 4 step, 12 week carbon footprint reduction methodology,” says John Wilkerson, CPSM, SSMBB.

“This low risk, lost cost approach was developed to ensure corporate supply chain, procurement, and EHS managers can create a customized sustainability implementation plan.”

This pilot program is in response to the U.S. H.R. 2454 - American Clean Energy & Security Act of 2009 (ACES) and Federal Leadership in Environmental, Energy, and Economic Performance Executive Order. Both Federal mandates require U.S. firms to reduce their Carbon Footprint by 17% in 2020.

If implemented as prescribed, this 4 step Green Supply Chain Pilot Program could reduce the Corporate Supply Chain carbon footprint in less than 12 weeks.

2020 Carbon Footprint Reduction Mandate Includes Federal Government as well as Industry

See theenergycollective.com post.. Setting a leadership path: Obama Executive Order on Federal Energy

Somewhat hidden to most Americans, the Bush Administration’s Executive Order 13423 was perhaps the best energy-related action taken by George W Bush. It set meaningful energy efficiency targets and created paths for more effective energy management across the federal government.

Today, President Barack Obama signed an Executive Order that builds on 13423 and builds on the funding from the stimulus package to accelerate the Federal government toward more aggressive sustainability goals across energy efficiency, reduced oil consumption, water conservation, waste reduction, and the use of Federal purchasing power to increase the speed of market adoption of environmentally-responsible products and technologies.

U.S. Carbon Cap-and-Trade Will Impact All North American Manufacturing and Service Businesses.

The carbon cap-and-trade and greenhouse gas (GHG) debate is heating up across the halls of the U.S. Congress, as well as supply management offices. Right or wrong, many corporate professionals are taking one of three positions:

1. Wait-and-see.
2. Aggressively develop green operational strategy plans.
3. Implement a measured green supply chain strategy.

Despite the corporate strategy and scientific controversy, carbon cap-and-trade is the newest supply chain risk, and it is here to stay. This article outlines a measured approach to greening your company's supply base as the carbon cap-and-trade debate continues. This approach reflects an effective green supply chain carbon-footprint-reduction program and ensures no waste, as the federal government (Currently the Senate) provides legislative guidance that will impact the global supply base.
